What is orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment is a dentistry speciality that involves straightening and perfecting your teeth’s position to improve their overall appearance. Not just focusing on the aesthetic of your teeth’s appearance, orthodontics dramatically enhances the long-term health of your gums, teeth, and jaw joints by spreading and evening the biting pressure across your teeth. It also helps create a fuller, more developed face and helps your breathing, sleeping and much more. Orthodontic treatment with our specialised team here at Frederick Dental Clinic, Dublin 1, will provide you with the perfect smile you always wanted and improve your overall oral health.
Why should you have Orthodontic Treatment?
Orthodontic treatment is for people of all ages. It can help improve your smile and your overall health. In fact, orthodontic treatment is one of the most effective ways to correct a wide variety of dental problems. And it doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming.
- Straightens and perfects misshapen, misplaced, protruding, and overcrowded teeth.

- Many people will have problems with their bite, having dental abnormalities such as under and overbites. Orthodontic treatment will help teeth meet adequately, ensuring a perfect bite structure.
- Orthodontic treatment can vastly improve the overall appearance and aesthetic of your teeth.
- It helps with long-term oral health concerns such as improving a person’s bite, gum health, and jaw joints.
- Helps create fuller facial features, expand the arch, improve breathing, sleeping and overall health
Different types of misalignment
When many people think of misaligned teeth, they often picture severe cases where the teeth are very visibly crooked. However, there are actually different types of malocclusion, or misalignment of the teeth. Here are the different types of malocclusion, as well as how they are treated.
This is the most common type of malocclusion, and it is characterized by the upper front teeth overlapping the lower front teeth. Class I malocclusions can be caused by a number of things, such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or genetics. They are usually easily corrected with braces.
Class II malocclusions occur when the upper front teeth sit behind the lower front teeth. They can also be caused by thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or genetics. Usually, headgear must be worn in addition to braces in order to correct a Class II malocclusion.
Class III malocclusions are when the lower front teeth sit in front of the upper front teeth. They can be caused by a number of things, such as premature loss of baby teeth, genetic factors, or trauma. Treatment usually involves wearing braces and a retainer to hold the lower jaw in place while the teeth are shifting.
If you have any concerns about your child’s teeth alignment, be sure to consult with your orthodontist. They will be able to diagnose which type of malocclusion your child has and develop a treatment plan accordingly. Early intervention is key in correcting misaligned teeth, so don’t hesitate to seek treatment for your child if you think they may have a problem!

Who is suitable for Orthodontic Treatment
01. Avail of our Free Consultation
Most people are suitable for some degree of orthodontic treatment to improve the alignment of their teeth. Our orthodontic clinic in Dublin offers a free consultation to determine what type of orthodontic treatment is right for you.
Some cases require more than just braces; this is most common with patients with a misaligned jaw, which occasionally needs surgical treatment. However, this is not common, and you will be advised if this is required for you during your initial consultation.
02. Before you start Orthodontic Treatment
Before starting your treatment plan, you must have a complete dental examination to identify any outstanding issues requiring treatment. Ensuring your mouth is healthy and ready to start your orthodontic treatment.
Your orthodontist will also need to take X-rays, photographs and dental impressions (moulds) of your teeth to assess your case. Based on this information, your orthodontist will develop a personalised treatment plan. Occasionally patients will be required to have teeth removed to make space for the teeth to be moved. If this is needed, your orthodontist will advise you before you start treatment.
